Running Blades: How They Work and Why They Matter

steptics Sports, unserer Carbonlauffeder mit Sohle

Running blades have revolutionized the world of adaptive sports, allowing amputees not only mobility but also a more active and inclusive lifestyle.  But what exactly are running blades, and why are they so important? Let’s take a closer look:

What Are Running Blades?

Running blades are specialized prosthetics designed to replicate the function of the human foot during running. Unlike standard prosthetics, which are primarily designed for walking, running blades are built for speed, agility, and effective shock absorption. Made from advanced materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), these blades are both lightweight and remarkably strong, allowing them to efficiently store and release energy with each stride. Running blades are one of the functional components of a sports prosthesis.

Enhancing Mobility and Independence Thanks to Running Blades

For many amputees, running blades are more than just a piece of equipment – they are a symbol of freedom and empowerment. Here’s how they make a difference:

  • Energy Return: The curved design of running blades allows them to capture energy as the runner lands and release it as they push off, closely mimicking the natural motion of a human foot. This energy return reduces the effort required to run, enabling amputees to achieve remarkable speeds.
  • Custom Fit: Modern running blades are custom-made to meet the specific needs and biomechanics of the individual, ensuring optimal performance and comfort. This precision reduces the risk of injury and promotes a more natural running gait.
  • Psychological Boost: In addition to the physical benefits, running blades also have a positive impact on psychological well-being, allowing amputees to regain a sense of normalcy and independence. Whether it’s running a marathon or enjoying a jog in the park, these blades open new possibilities for those who use them and pave the way back into society.

Sports Prostheses Offer Many Benefits, but Are Unaffordable for Most People

Despite their many benefits, sports prostheses are not covered by health insurance in most countries. According to a ruling by the German Federal Social Court, the public funding of recreational and club sports is not part of the tasks of health insurance companies when it comes to providing medical aids, which means that most amputees do not receive reimbursement for a sports prosthesis from their health insurance company.
